Since 1999, hundreds of thousands of people have ensured their drinking water is safe and avoided ruined adventures with SteriPEN® Classic. The next generation of Classic operates on four AA batteries batteries. With one set of alkaline batteries, Classic 3 purifies up to 50 liters or supercharge your Classic 3 with lithium batteries and treat up to 150 liters. With a lamp life of up to 8,000 liters, you’ll be drinking safe water for over 7 years! When camping, hiking, backpacking or traveling the Classic 3 with Pre-Filter is the perfect pack to keep you safely hydrated. Classic 3’s UV light destroys over 99.9% of waterborne microorganisms that cause illness.
With SteriPEN Classic 3, one set of four alkaline batteries will treat 100 half-liters or 50 full liters of water. Or supercharge your SteriPEN with a set of lithium batteries and you’ll treat up to 150 liters! Classic 3’s enhanced LED indicator panel lets you know treatment size and status of batteries and UV lamp. Classic 3 is sleek and ergonomic with an easy-to-remove twist-off lamp cover. Like all SteriPEN UV water purifiers, Classic 3 is simple to use: remove the lamp cover, press the activation button, submerge in water and stir. In 48 seconds you have ½ liter of safe drinking water or purify a full liter in 90 seconds. Compared to standard chemical treatments that can take up to four hours, that’s safe water fast without adding chemicals that can leave an unpleasant aftertaste.
The 40×40 micron screen Pre-Filter fits perfectly on wide-mouth one liter water bottles and removes particulates that can get in the way of UV light in water. The Pre-Filter is designed to be stored directly on a wide mouth bottle and the SteriPEN Classic 3 fits perfectly in the filter. Just insert Classic 3 in the filter opening, turn the bottle upside down, and gently rock to circulate light throughout bottle. The tapered end also fits snugly in plastic water bottles. Just insert the lamp into the water bottle, turn it upside down and gently rock the bottle.

About SteriPEN® |
|
Overview of SteriPEN®
SteriPEN®'s Beginnings: Miles Maiden, the founder of Hydro-Photon, Inc. and a dedicated outdoorsman, thought that there were better ways than filters or chemicals to purify water in the wild. After years of research, he dedicated himself to the development of ultraviolet technology – the same technology used in municipal water treatment plants – for use in a personal, portable device that would provide the user with safe drinking water anywhere. Hydro-Photon received its first SteriPEN® patent in 1999, and now holds eight patents.
About the SteriPEN® Brand: In 1999, the first SteriPEN® was sold through REI, and in 2011 TIME Magazine named the SteriPEN® one of the “Top 100 All-Time Gadgets.” The SteriPEN® is now known as the first and fastest portable UV water purifier available. It destroys viruses, bacteria and protozoa—including Giardia and Cryptosporidium—in seconds. Its speed, effectiveness and portability have impressed end users and media alike. Backpacker Magazine, Outside Magazine, Newsweek, and the Today Show have featured SteriPEN® as a powerful, user-friendly alternative to pumps, chemicals and filters.
SteriPEN®'s Location: HPI is located on the coast of Maine. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to be surrounded by such natural beauty. In their town of Blue Hill, sailboats dot the bay and they can see the mountains of Acadia National Park to the north, and the Camden Hills to the south. Their community attracts artists of all kinds; land and wildlife conservationists; activists; and organic farmers. Many people move there because they want to make a change from fast-paced urban living, to find balance in their day-to-day. Living there also tends to bring out the protector in SteriPEN®, the urge to respect our natural resources and do their part to make the world a better place.
Facts about SteriPEN®
SteriPEN® Fact 1: AA Batteries – Lithium, Alkaline or NiMH Rechargeable: SteriPEN® Classic 3 will treat around 50 liters of water with alkaline batteries and up to 150 liters with lithium batteries. Previous SteriPEN® models (Classic, Traveler, Emergency) were less efficient and SteriPEN® could not recommend using alkaline batteries. Lithium batters should be used with these models to ensure adequate treatments per set of batteries. Of course, the quality of batteries will affect the number of treatments per set. SteriPEN® recommends using high quality batteries so you will replace them less frequently.
SteriPEN® Fact 2: SteriPEN® works in cold weather: While low temperatures can cause problems with batteries they don’t interfere with the effectiveness of UV light. SteriPEN® recommend keeping batteries or SteriPEN® somewhere warm (like an inner pocket). |

Facts about SteriPEN® Continued
SteriPEN® Fact 3: SteriPEN® UV lamps work for 4,000 or 8,000 activations: Most SteriPEN® models are limited to 4,000 or 8,000 activations to ensure maximum lamp quality.
SteriPEN® Fact 4: SteriPEN is water resistant: It is possible for water to get into a SteriPEN®, but this is a rare occurrence. The lamp area, buttons and main shaft are completely waterproof. The battery compartment is water resistant, but not totally waterproof, so SteriPEN® suggest you avoid completely submerging your SteriPEN®.
SteriPEN® Fact 5: SteriPEN® doesn’t eliminate microorganisms on the threads, rim or lids of bottles: Microorganisms in such small levels are rarely dangerous. SteriPEN® recommends drying the water off the lid, rim and threads of the bottle with a towel or bandana.
SteriPEN® Fact 6: SteriPEN® are quite durable: Despite using a UV lamp, SteriPEN®s are quite sturdy. SteriPEN® have heard reports of people accidentally dropping a SteriPEN® off a cliff and recovering it in working order. Part of SteriPEN®'s development process consists of dropping SteriPENs from more than 50 feet to make sure they still function. SteriPEN® use a buffering system on the lamp that act as a shock absorber and allow UV light to pass through. The lamp is encased in what looks like glass, but is actually high-strength quartz, which provides very strong lamp protection. Having said that, SteriPEN®s of course aren’t indestructible, and should be handled responsibly. SteriPEN® shot a SteriPEN® from a potato gun to test durability. While SteriPEN® don’t recommend you try this at home, they do think it makes a strong statement about SteriPEN® durability.
SteriPEN® Fact 7: SteriPEN® is a lightweight purification option: Many choose SteriPEN®s because they’re small, light and easy to pack. Some argue you need to use a wide mouth bottle and carry extra batteries, canceling out the weight benefits, however many other bottle options exist and frequently it isn’t necessary to carry extra batteries. The SteriPEN® Adventurer Opti requires slightly wider-mouth bottles (Gatorade bottles work fine, for example) but other models like SteriPEN® Classic 3 and SteriPEN® Ultra can be used on most all standard water bottles. Unless you’re in a situation where you’ll need to purify water for a long period of time or large group of people, one set of batteries should take care of your needs. Of course, batteries can malfunction for a variety of reasons, so it’s recommended to bring along an alternative water treatment method. It’s never advisable to go deep into the backcountry or other situations without a backup water treatment method, no matter what your treatment of choice. |
